About Gary Hambleton
Gary Hambleton’s journey through clay has spanned decades, beginning with formative training at Courtland’s and a deep dive into stoneware at Austware Pottery, where he honed his craft until 1985. His artistic evolution took shape at the Old Cheese Factory in Balingup, where his residency laid the foundation for a style that became unmistakably his own.
In 1989, Gary embarked on his own venture, establishing The Old Stables Pottery, where his dedication to creating stoneware pieces that are as functional as they are beautiful gained wide recognition. His pursuit of traditional methods led him to Nepal in 2004, where he immersed himself in ancient pottery-making techniques, expanding his skills with invaluable insights into primitive technology.
Gary returned to Western Australia in 2010, settling in Bunbury and eventually joining Commonage Pottery in 2019. As the resident artist, he specializes in high-temperature reduction firings (cone 11), producing work known for its rich copper reds, refined Chun glazes, and striking Jun finishes. His pieces reflect a balance of resilience and elegance, rooted in tradition yet entirely his own.
Gary’s relationship with Happs Winery & Commonage Pottery runs deep, marking milestones in both his career and the venue’s legacy. Today, visitors to Commonage Pottery can see Gary at work, crafting with passion and precision, as he shares his knowledge through public demonstrations and workshops.
Celebrated as one of the South West’s finest potters, Gary Hambleton’s work is a testament to the power of clay and the timeless pursuit of artistic excellence.
